Illeo-Cecal Valve Syndrome

The Ileo-cecal valve receives a great deal of attention in complementary care modalities. Probably the applied kinesiology approach to this syndrome is the most comprehensive to date. There are several techniques for addressing the problem in applied physiology, chiropractic, osteopathy, and therapeutic massage. At this stage it is usually treated symptomatically and the treatment needs to be repeated quite frequently.

The ICV is the valve between the small and large intestines. It is located in the lower right abdomen in the “appendix” area. It is designed as a one-way valve to allow the flow of waste from the small intestine to the large intestine. It has the ability to regulate the flow according to changing conditions.

The key to effectively addressing the Ileo-Cecal Valve Syndrome is to understand that the ileo-cecal valve itself is not the cause of the syndrome. Disturbances of the ileo-cecal are merely the body’s way of alerting us that deeper causative factors are at play. Typical general symptoms include:

•                Mood swings
•                Feelings of separation and isolation
•                Chronic fatigue
•                Dark circles under the eyes (toxic system)
•                Cramps
•                Intermittent fever
•                Headaches
•                Nightmares or disturbed sleep
•                Susceptible to catching the "flu"

When the ileo-cecal valve muscles are over contracted (closed) or over relaxed (open) the following symptoms present:

Symptoms of over contraction:

•                Constipation and general problems with elimination
•                Inflammation of the appendix (because of the increased level of toxins)
•                Inability to “let go”
•                Over-attachment, i.e., situations, persons, conditions

Symptoms of under contraction:

•                Classic flu and common cold symptoms
•                Frequent bowel movements, often with urgency
•                Runny stool, often with a lot of gas
•                General muscle pain and feeling of weakness
•                Fever (Body trying to break down toxins)
•                Disturbances in vision – including blurriness and floaters
•                Lack of clarity in thinking processes

The interesting factor is that many people experience symptoms from both lists because the ICV, when malfunctioning, will often fluctuate between over contraction and under contraction.

The BodyTalk approach to addressing Ileo-Cecal Valve Syndrome

In the BodyTalk, Principles of Consciousness course we discussed the nature of the various body parts and how they relate to one another. When we look at the gastro-intestinal tract we start to get a clear picture of the factors behind a malfunctioning ICV. Remember that when we talk of an organ’s function, we need to understand that it is intimately related to its associated meridian. Each meridian has internal connections to those parts of the brain relating to the function of its associated organ.

The stomach represents the conscious mind and our normal thinking processes. These processes are then passed to the small intestine, which represents the intellect. The intellect utilizes discernment to separate the “good” thoughts from the “bad” thoughts. Locally, it also separates the good food from the bad food. It absorbs the good and passes the waste onto the large intestine.

The large intestine is the great eliminator. It conducts the wastes in the body to the outside of the body via the anus. If it is sluggish and under-functioning, the large intestine can cause some of the toxins and wastes to be absorbed into the blood and lymph system and deposited into the skin for elimination. This is why so many skin conditions are related to bowel function. Another elimination pathway could be through its metal energy partner, the lungs. (We often see a reciprocal relationship between asthma and eczema. When the asthma is bad, the eczema is good. When the eczema flares up, the asthma is often gone.)

A Closed ICV

If the colon is blocked up and constipated, then the ICV will contract to prevent more waste from being pushed into the already clogged colon. If the colon has diarrhea, it might also close to stop the food in the small intestine from flowing into the colon too quickly, thereby reducing the absorption of good nutrition in the small intestine. The foregoing represents natural processes.

At the consciousness level, the body utilizes the “fruits of the intellectual processing” of the associated areas of the brain. The waste, and processes that gave the results need to be expelled. Hence they are passed through the ICV to the eliminator – the large intestine.  The large intestine can also represent the process of expressing the “fruits of the intellectual processing” by letting go of them: Expressing them to the world in speech, writing, etc. When the ICV is over-contracted, the person may have great ideas but be unable to express them in a clear way.

An Open ICV

It is rare that the body needs the ICV to be under-contracted. When this happens, it is usually a pathology, indicating that the “one way” function of the valve is compromised. When this happens the waste in the bowel can flow backwards into the small intestine creating toxic buildup.

At the consciousness level, an under-contracted ICV may mean that the “fruits of the intellectual processes” will be passed on too soon. This symptom will often present in the person who expresses the new thoughts and ideas by blurting them out prematurely before they are clear in their own mind.

The Ileo-Cecal Personality

The large intestine classically represents the process of “letting go.” This type of letting go does not just refer to physical waste products. It also refers to emotions, ideas, beliefs, stress, and all the challenges of life. Bioenergetics shows us that all these energies that need to be discarded, or let go of, flow to the diaphragm, and from there into the intestines for final processing and elimination.

The lack of ability to “go with the flow” of life and let go is indicated by the controlling personality. The person who has control issues is the classic ICV syndrome personality type. They are usually type ‘A’ personalities who work hard, play hard, and are very demanding on themselves and those around them. They can manifest many disease patterns according to their general genetic makeup and health dispositions.

In some cases the ICV personality type is aptly seen as “anal retentive.” This acronym descriptively explains why such people are so susceptible to hemorrhoids and anal fissures. To let go of the food the anal valve has to relax and release the contents of the bowel. The controlling personality has psychological resistance to this and will tend to hold a great deal of tension in their anus and pubococcygeus muscle, leading to local health issues.

The controlling personality will occasionally have a major crisis in the life. It could be a major financial loss, bad divorce with loss of family and friends, etc. In this case they literally feel like the “bottom is falling out of their life.” And literally it does: they have extreme diarrhea – the ultimate in letting go or, more correctly, loss of the illusion of control!

The Migraine Personality

This is a variation of the controlling personality. There are many types of migraines but one of the most common is the cluster migraine that starts around puberty and has strong hereditary influences.

These migraines are used by the body as a means of stress release. Classically, the migraine personality is a type ‘A’ person who works hard all week and builds up stress because they are, at some level, never fully satisfied with their work output. Then, on the weekend, their body has to release the stress. When the working week was the classical Monday to Friday, it was interesting to note that 80% of these migraines occurred on Sundays. It is like a volcano that has built up from suppressed frustration. In this case, because suppressed anger (frustration) is involved, the liver and gall bladder are major players. When the headache erupts, it follows the pathway of the gall bladder meridian and has classical symptoms of disturbances of the liver and gall bladder.

Lets go back to just before the migraine seems to start. There is a situation of accumulative intellectual (small intestine) stress building up during the week. Because of this build up, the ICV will try to protect the large intestine from a sudden releasing flow into the bowel, which would overload its processes. Hence the ICV will over contract. These people will often notice pain in the lower right abdomen on the Friday and Saturday. In fact they often wonder if they have an inflamed appendix. The will often have many of the associated symptoms listed earlier.

Finally the backpressure of stressed energy will cause the Gall Bladder to suddenly release the energy up its meridian pathway. This overloads the brain circuits, setting of a “brain storm” of neural overload, which manifests as a migraine. Brain scans show these migraines to be just like major electrical storms in the brain. In some people, their genetic makeup may manifest this as a form of epileptic seizure. (The same drugs are often given for both migraine and epilepsy.)

I have often seen this type of migraine in children around 10 to 14 years of age. They go though stress of school and have the controlling personality they inherited. Hence, they wake up with lower right abdominal pain and general weakness and nausea and a mild headache when they are active. It is often gone by lunchtime and then they are well. This is the early sign of a migraine. There is usually a family history and the migraines start with the major changes of puberty.

Addressing the ICV symptomatically can be a good first aid but symptomatic treatment does not cure it. In BodyTalk, the ICV will often come up in our links to be part of a bigger formula that addresses the total picture. In the meantime, I hope this short article will help keep the ICV more in mind when working with clients.

Government Recognition for BodyTalk….More Details!

Since 1995, The BodyTalk System consisted of two workshops both teaching new approaches in techniques as another modality. Since then it has continued to grow into a full profession within the scope of complementary medicine. There is enough information and materials to fill a complete degree course in Complementary Energy Medicine.

Consistent with this progress has been a push for official recognition with governments, colleges, and healthcare insurance companies. This has been happening over the past five years, as it is a long arduous pathway to weave your way through governmental and educational inertia, skeptics, and the health providers who feel threatened by a very modern and scientific approach to complementary healthcare.

This challenge has been going on in three main fronts:
Europe - particularly Germany – Led by Claudia Schembri-Heitmann
Canada – Led by Andrea Carter and Amanda Rollefstad
Australia – Led by Melissa Smith and Sue Broughton

Europe is still going strong and heading in the right direction. The discussions with the representatives are underway and we are working on the structure and details of the course content.

Canada has been going well and we plan to release some more information on this shortly.

Australia has been pretty slack as far as student numbers and membership. This is mainly due to a shortage of instructors and it is very expensive for instructors from other countries to teach there profitably. This is about to change – big time!

Our Australian branch keeps working diligently towards government recognition of BodyTalk as a professional career. Recently some of you saw an announcement in the newsletter and on my blog:

The BodyTalk System has now gained official accreditation with the Australian government for a Certificate IV training qualification. This means that potential students may qualify for government assistance to study. It will also provide the opportunity to lobby Health Funds to provide reimbursement for BodyTalk sessions.

Thanks to Melissa Smith and Sue Broughton for all their hard work on this project. This was extra special for me – being Australian. And – they received the news of final acceptance while I was here in Australia.

The project is starting out as a certificate IV course and includes all the basic sciences and practice administration skills the government requires to be recognized as a Health care professional. It is also a Federal recognition and covers all states in Australia.

Originally, the course will be focusing on weekend training to suit existing health care professionals. Later it will be done as a fulltime course. The first course starts in February 2013!
Once the Certificate IV course is well under way, the next step will be to teach the rest of the BodyTalk System in a degree format.

There will be a lot more details appearing on our web site and newsletter in the near future.

This progression is very beneficial for all BodyTalk practitioners because it sets a precedent from a country that is internationally recognized as having one of the best health care systems in the world with very high standards.

Poem by Esther Veltheim

Like a feather, touched
By the whim of Your breath,
I fly, I fall, I hang,
As if suspended
In that space
Between You and me.
The breath, the feather
dancing in unison.
This strange
and constant dance,
Where You dance me
and I perform.
And then, with certainty
I know there is
no You, no me,
I lose myself.
No thought, no word,
No understanding
can come close,
to what is beyond them.

I first met Alberto last year at the quantum health conference and again at the conference in Granada earlier this year. I remember the first thing that impressed me most about him was how multilingual he was. It seemed he could speak any language fluently. I was then quite surprised when all the conference speakers were having a dinner at a major restaurant with a live band playing. Alberto got up an walked onto the stage and was handed a guitar. The band seemed to know him and was very excited that he intended to play with them. He then proceeded to sing and play guitar to the delight of everyone. It appears he is well-known as an accomplished musician and performer amongst his other many achievements.
Alberto then came to dinner at Renata's place and followed up by attending my three-day intensive explanation of BodyTalk a month later. His questions and input during those three days was so very positive. It showed him to be a deep thinker about what it really means to be a doctor. He is very involved as a medical professor at the University and it was a delight to hear that he insists on training all the medical students extensively in diet and nutrition as well as a deeper understanding of alternative medicine and the energy basis of the human body.
I really look forward to my future associations with Alberto as I believe he has so much to offer the BodyTalk matrix from all the wisdom he has accumulated in his remarkable career.

Treating the Family Unit

The Nut That Fell Too Far From The Tree

by Tim Hall

It was storming when this baby acorn fell from its home high upon the tree top. The wind carried it from its cluster of comfort to the cold wet ground far away from the trunk that so recently provided it with nourishment and growth. There were no adjacent nuts nor any wispering direction from the mother oak tree. What is this nut to do?

All that it has known is to grow and add bulk to itself while refining the quality of the inner seed, though it knows not what the inner seed is for necessarily. It only has what little it knows, and it is now in the unknown. As the moisure sets in and the outer shell softens, the acorn learns its no longer growing, but should it just rot away? Isn't this unknown direction the path to certain death?

The mysterious eye of a hurricane is the silent and unknowable inherent power source of the raging storm. The known is the violent storm and the unknown is the peaceful silence. To escape from a storm is one thing. To find the central still point of the storm and rest there in peace amidst the torent winds, is quite another indeed. In this sense, is the acorn giving up on life and yielding to the impending doom? Or is it thriving in the midst of decay?

Even natural and spontaneous action is purposeful, defininte and requires certain circumstances and situations for its fulfillment. Yet, if some action is natural and spontaneous, how can any person aid that unfoldment, anymore than can an acorn help itself into being a tree? When we find ourselves trying to sprout, should we reverse direction and stop doing in the name of not forcing what is natural? Should the acorn stop what is coming natural to it, and is that even possible? How can anyone or anything yield to the activity that Is, while not forcing and also not rejecting? What to do? How does one walk the razor's edge without being sliced in two?

What is to do, is to undo what doesn't need to be done. The inner seed is the heart of the acorn. The outer shell rots away for the sake of the seed. It doesn't look pretty but the shell has to go. It served it purpose and now its purpose is to let go of that purpose.
There is a purpose to life and it is to live from within. Live like the inner seed who is in the process of taking root while the hard outer shell softens and becomes vulnerable to the nutrients of its new home, the rich soil. During a BodyTalk session, we go according to our nutrient rich soil called 'priority'. The inner dictates from the unknown, takes the reigns and we bounce to the beat of a different drummer. This does not have to be limited to a few minutes of practice every day. Be the seed. The outer storm is an expression of the inner eye of silence, and the mighty Oak is an expression of the seed.

A consciousness-based session is based in one's own consciousness. It is from whereever we are right now that priority can take root and all we have to do is acknowledge that we are rotten on the outside and that is part of the ultimate goal. Let yourself go and be what you already are. If you are living like who you are not, it is like doing sessions according to your own agenda forgoing priority. Does that make any sense? Wouldn't it sting a little to do a session according only to what you already know? Then why live that way? Step into the unknown. Its the only thing that you've always truly known and could never not know, but its only known as the unknown when you knowingly step into it by unknowing what you think you know. This is the knowing that needs to be known - to unknow that you know.

This is not to forget, dismiss, repress or be dull. It is not an excape from the storm, it is to unknown in the midst of the present knowledge. Everything has its place.

The applied consciousness of finding health via BodyTalk and the Life Sciences is more than a practice. It is a lifestyle. Live the unknowable.

Open Heart

Hello John

It's me, Kelley Burry, from Namaste Nova, NS Canada. You did a session for my heart in the last moments of Finding Health 2 in Florida.

The aftermath has been interesting........
For about 48 hours after, I experienced extreme pain in my chest and it felt like I had literally had open-heart surgery! I was even bruised! After this subsided I quickly began to feel wonderful in my physical and emotional body.  I am not swollen anymore nor do I feel heavy or congested or lethargic.  It seems incredible!  I have been experiencing a big change in my practice and what my sessions look like these days.  My focus is stronger, my MindScape is clearer, my intuition is quicker and I am more confident.  My daughter immediately noticed a huge energic shift on our farm retreat - she said it feels lighter and hopeful.

Leo (one of my horses in the herd, you noticed that he was trying to help me with this issue in particular) is also changing daily!  At first I didn't think he was going to make it but I did exactly what you told me to do - tap his cortices a lot and tell him he does not have to carry this any more - it is done! He has waffled from severe colic in one moment to extreme joy and energy in the next, for weeks now! Leo is not out of the woods yet but we are paying close attention to him and allowing him to lead us through the process of whatever this is!

It seems that my connection to the herd and to our land and all that is here is VERY heightened!!!! WHOA!! I feel like we are being supported on levels I can't even describe!
There is more I seem to feel but do not have words to describe.

Thank-you for this new lease on life and this new experience! What a ride!

The Dai Mai - The Belt Meridian

Eastern Medicine - Sneak Preview
The Dai Mai meridian is one of the eight ancestral meridians that have a very important function in traditional Chinese acupuncture as regulators of the 12 main meridians. As mentioned in my Chong Mai article, the reason they are called ancestral meridians is that they are the main energic controllers of our genetic ancestry. Hence, they are a powerful way of influencing genetically based diseases in the body from the point of view of traditional acupuncture.

Many colleges and courses on Chinese medicine do not address the ancestral meridians because of the lack of understanding of how they function, and a fear that treating them directly may have adverse epigenetic effects. It is true, that if addressed carelessly by the untrained practitioner using acupuncture needles, some nasty side effects can occur. However, when they are addressed using advanced BodyTalk formulas, they can give rise to incredibly powerful results without any fear of side effects. This is why I have included them in my new "Eastern Medicine" course.

The Dai Mai is the only Meridian that goes around the body rather than up or down the body.  The main functional pathway of the meridian pathway circles the body starting at the level of the third lumbar vertebrae, it then dips lower as it goes around to the front of the body so that in the front of the body it usually passes midway between the pubic bone and the umbilicus. In other words, it wraps the body like a belt would on a person with a big stomach. This has particular significance with this Meridian because of the fact that one of its main functions is the balance the upper and lower parts of the body.

When the Dai Mai is dysfunctional it appears as though the "belt" tightens. This will eventually lead to an energic splitting of the body between top and bottom, which can result in major changes in body shape, usually, but not always, gender related.

Women:  In a severe case, the woman from the waist up will appear thin and undernourished. The breast will be physically small, or, if they were originally large, they will have lost great deal of volume and tone. From the waist down the hips and legs will be large.

Men: The opposite will occur with men. From the waist up they will have a large belly, chest, and shoulders. From the top of the hips down they will be skinny and appear undernourished and the legs will be thin and weak. A healthy Dai Mai plays a large role in influencing healthy Qi and blood circulation to the legs.

When the changes are this dramatic, it usually means the person will have quite strong epigenetic disorders. These usually involve the digestive system - particularly the liver and gallbladder. There will be poor digestion of fats, and a very strong tendency to violent headaches – especially migraines.  Typically, coupled with the migraine, will be a form of psoriasis. If untreated, the psoriasis will often develop into psoriatic arthritis. Certain varieties of Type 2 diabetes are also common.

Energetic issues involving the Dai Mai can manifest in a person "near to tears" from frustration, indecision or low self-esteem (All typical liver and gall bladder behaviors). People with Dai Mai issues tend to repress their emotions and can easily develop psychological complexes requiring a careful therapeutic approach.

When the appropriate BodyTalk formulas are applied to the right acupuncture points associated with this Meridian, the results can be very significant.

I remember the case of a 33-year-old female architect who I recognized as a classic Dai Mai body type when she first walked into my office. She was very thin in the upper body right down to the waist, and had very large hips and thighs, with a great deal of stress in the face indicating she was suffering from quite serious symptoms.
In fact she was so ill that the specialist looking after her indicated to her husband that her life was in danger over the next decade. She had type II diabetes that was proving very hard to control because the insulin levels swung so dramatically. She also had severe migraines at least three days every week, and she was asthmatic. She also had polycystic ovaries, several small fibroids of the uterus, was not ovulating, and was told that she would never be able to have children.
When the Dai Mai was addressed, the quickest response occurred with the migraines, which totally disappeared within 2 months. Her asthma improved at least 60%, and her type II diabetes was able to be stabilized, and greatly reduced as far as symptoms were concerned. The fibroids and polycystic ovaries totally cleared up and she gave birth to a healthy boy 15 months after her first session.

Silence

Of the pregnant Silence
No-thing is born.
No-one hears the words
that fill It,
and no words can describe
the Silence they fill.
Broken by noise,
silence is undestroyed.
Born of Itself,
No-thing is created.
When noise subsides
into Silence
What has changed?
Nothing has happened.

Can BodyTalk Work on Serious Conditions Such as Paralysis?

With BodyTalk we don’t' focus on what issues can be addressed - because that would be too limiting. We have found that BodyTalk has addressed a multitude of problems and dis-eases too numerous to list.

Symptoms arise in a client because their system or state of balance is compromised in varying areas of their life. BodyTalk looks at a person as a whole - body, mind and spirit and the focus is to bring that person into a better state of balance so that they can heal on many levels.

The key is to be able to see the bigger picture of a health problem and then all of its causative factors become apparent. It is also important to note that any given disease can have a plethora of causative factors, many of which are very different, even for the same disease. So the customized treatment within a BodyTalk session allows for all causative factors to be addressed no matter what the health problem has been labeled.

There are no set recipes for addressing various symptoms unlike most other methods of healing. Each person is treated as an individual with a unique history that has created the set of symptoms they are experiencing.

In serious conditions such as cerebral palsy, autism, juvenile paralysis, etc., I have found that total recoveries are extremely rare. However, I have also found that most of these cases are not clear-cut in outcomes. The problem lies in the fact that when people are that sick, every new symptom and development is blamed on the original disease, when this isn't always the case. The trend is to ignore the new problem and focus on helping the patient adapt to the changes.

In BodyTalk, we have found that many of the symptoms can be addressed and this can make a very big difference to quality of life and even improve general functioning. The concept of BodyTalk is that it can optimize the health potential of each individual. So many very sick people are not living to their potential because they have been “categorized” into a specific disease label.

The ability to understand this and to have specific techniques to bring about health optimization is a major asset of the BodyTalk System.
